More than 500 people gathered in Munn Park at 4:30 p.m. today for a rally to support increased state funding for public education. After that, they walked to Florida Avenue to wave signs encouraging support from passing drivers. Speakers in the video, in order, are:
- Daphne Harris, reading coach at Dixieland Elementary School
- Sela Lamb, a 7th grader at McKeel Academy of Technology whose parents are both public school teachers
- Jennifer Sabin, a public education advocate who helped organize today’s rally.

After the rally, teachers and supporters walked to Florida Avenue and waved signs seeking support for public education. The local rally coincided with a protest in Tallahassee that drew thousands of teachers from around the state one day before legislators begin their annual session.
More than 1,000 Polk teachers attended today’s rally at the state Capitol. Teachers were encouraged to wear “red for ed.” Polk teachers are in the foreground of this photo from the Florida Capitol:
