Students from Harrison School for the Arts debuted a musical about Publix Super Markets founder George Jenkins tonight at the annual meeting of the Greater Lakeland Chamber of Commerce.
The play, “When You Dream: A Legacy of Giving,” and lyrics were written by Harrison Principal Daryl Ward with music by Tyler Campbell, a Lakeland High School English teacher. The production was directed by Harrison faculty members Suzi Gartrell Lambert and Laurel Renfroe. Ryland Marbutt, a recent Harrison grad now studying at Pace University in New York City, played George Jenkins.
The musical will be performed again April 7 at Harrison’s Roll out the Red Carpet gala.
The production tells the story of Jenkins starting Publix on a foundation of employee appreciation and civic duty after feeling unheard by a previous employer. Key lines implore “when you dream, dream big dreams” and “nobody cares how much you know til they know how much you care.”
The musical production capped a meeting at which the Chamber presented its two big annual awards:
- The George Jenkins Award for community leadership was presented to Alice Hunt, a former Chamber chairwoman and an executive at Hunt Construction of Central Florida Inc.
- The Scott Linder Small Business of the Year Award went to Tinsley Creative, headed by Donovan Tinsley.
In addition, the chamber’s chairman’s gavel was passed from accountant Janice Tedder Jones to banker Waymon Snuggs.
