National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 24.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Lakeland Police Department, 219 N. Massachusetts Ave, will host a drive-through drop-off for unwanted, unneeded, or expired medication.

Several additional locations in Polk County will also collect items, aiming to prevent abuse and potential safety hazards from improper disposal.

Accepted items:

  • Human and pet prescriptions in liquid and solid form
  • Over-the-counter medicines
  • Vitamins
  • Vaping pens, like JUULs, and e-cigarette devices with batteries removed

Items should be placed in a clear, sealed plastic bag.

At any time, unwanted medication can be safely discarded in a 24/7 dropbox in the LPD lobby.
