Starting tomorrow, Lakeland residents have several ways to show appreciation for those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during Veterans Day weekend. The cityโs main ceremony and parade will be Saturday, Nov. 8, while other local organizations are hosting tributes through the actual holiday on Tuesday.
Friday: Veterans Breakfast
When: Friday, Nov. 7, 7 a.m.
Where: 4202 Pipkin Creek Road
The Rotary Clubs of Lakeland, Lakeland Sunrise, Lakeland TigerTown, and Lakeland South are hosting their 16th Annual Salute to Veterans Breakfast at Heritage Baptist Church, featuring Dr. K. Alan Snyder, Professor at Southeastern University who will share insights on โThe Continental Army, Navy, and Marines.โ
The breakfast buffet, provided by Mission BBQ, is free for veterans and $10 for non-veterans.
Saturday: City of Lakeland Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade
When: Saturday, Nov. 8, 10 a.m.
Where: Veterans Memorial Park, 701 W. Lime St.
Lakelandโs official Veterans Day ceremony will also feature historian Dr. Alan Snyder, presenting โThe Path to Freedomโ in honor of the nationโs founding and its service members.
Immediately after the ceremony, the parade steps off around 11 a.m., departing from the RP Funding Center, traveling east along Lemon Street, turning north on Kentucky Avenue and ending at Munn Park.
Veteran groups, JROTC units, Sea Cadets, Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts, marching bands and city public-safety crews will participate.
Tip to attend: If coming for the parade, pick a spot along Lemon Street or Kentucky Avenue downtown. Bring a small American flag and wear red/white/blue to show support.
Sunday: Lakeland Concert Band โ Veteran Concert
When: Sunday, Nov. 9, 2:30 p.m.
Where: St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4450 Harden Blvd.
The Lakeland Concert Band will present its first free concert of the season, honoring veterans. It will feature marches, patriotic music and a salute to the armed forces.
Tuesday: Flag-Raising Ceremony at Lakeland Regional Health
When: Tuesday, Nov. 11, 8 a.m. Veterans Day
Where: Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion, Lakeland Regional Health
Lakeland Regional Health will hold a solemn flag-raising ceremony outside the Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women and Children. The event is open to the community and will include remarks from hospital leaders and local veteransโ organizations.
Closures
There are also several closures in observance of Veterans Day:
- Public schools will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11.
- City Hall and most government offices, including all three Lakeland Public Library locations, will also be closed Tuesday.
- Residents whose trash is usually collected on Tuesday will have their bins emptied on Wednesday instead.
