To protect student privacy and minimize classroom disruptions, Polk County Public Schools has restricted Meta/Ray-Ban glasses and similar devices on campus. Announced on Aug. 13, the policy states that students found with devices will face consequences and may even be referred to law enforcement.
The district explains that the restriction applies to “all wearable devices capable of covertly or unobtrusively recording, photographing, livestreaming, transmitting, receiving, or remotely monitoring communications or activities.”
Potential consequences include:
- Requests to remove and stop using the device
- Confiscation by school administration
- Progressive disciplinary action for repeated violations or unlawful activity
According to the policy, “use of any recording device in a restroom, locker room, changing area, shower facility, or other location where an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy is strictly prohibited and will be treated as a serious matter.”
Exceptions will be made if a child requires a wearable electronic device because of a legally required accommodation.
Parents are encouraged to communicate these expectations to their students.
