• RENT AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE for households that suffered economic losses because of COVID-19 is being increased. Polk County is getting $21.8 million in federal aid in addition to the $6.7 million in rent and mortgage assistance already awarded. No word yet on when the funds will be available.
  • A CELL TOWER proposed for 1800 Harden Blvd. has been blocked by the Lakeland Planning & Zoning Board in a 4-2 vote. Last year the same board approved another tower nearby but plans for it were halted by the City Commission.
  • U.S. REP. SCOTT FRANKLIN of Lakeland attended the inauguration of President Biden on Wednesday, unlike fellow Republican Rep. Greg Stuebe of Sarasota, whose district reaches toward South Lakeland. In a text, Franklin wished Biden well, saying, “Our country needs him to be successful.”
