Publix Super Markets is aiming to make specialty/natural/organic food shopping a pleasure in its hometown by placing a GreenWise Market across South Florida Avenue from Lake Miriam Plaza. The 1,171-store, Lakeland-based grocery chain announced today the Lakeland GreenWise store is anticipated to occupy 25,000 square feet. A typical Publix super market is more than twice that size.

No opening date has been set yet, Publix said in a news release.

“Our new GreenWise Market concept celebrates specialty, natural and organic foods, and we think foodies and health-conscious customers alike will love what the store will offer,” Kevin Murphy, Publix senior vice president of retail operations, said in the news release “We’re especially excited to announce a location in our home town.”

Artist’s conception of the Tallahassee GreenWise store, scheduled to open this fall.

The first generation of GreenWise stores were built a decade ago in Tampa’s Hyde Park neighborhood, Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens. A second generation was announced last year, with the first two locations planned for Tallahassee late this year and Mount Pleasant, S.C., early next year. Unlike the first three Publix GreenWise stores, the new-generation stores won’t carry the Publix name in the branding.

There’s no word yet on whether changes are planned for the Lake Miriam Publix in anticipation of a GreenWise store across the street.

The new store will have “only a limited selection of traditional grocery items,” spokesman Brian West told Tampa Business Journal.

But the business journal reports you can expect prepared foods: wine and cheese tastings and burrito bowls, Mediterranean pizza, sushi, smoked wings and more.

“This is not your typical grocery store, and sometimes you may not even go there to shop for groceries,” West said. “You’ll find exciting new local craft beers and kombucha on tap in POURS, or you can order a wine flight and lounge in the mezzanine area with friends.”

On the other end of Lakeland, Chamberlin’s opened its second Lakeland natural foods market, a 7,000-square-foot store, across from Lakeland Square Mall last year.
