Publix Super Markets Inc. and two other grocers were among the four Best Workplaces in Retail in a listing released by Fortune Magazine today. Lakeland-based Publix placed fourth among large retailers, after first-place Wegmans Food Markets of Rochester, N.Y., and second-place Nugget Market of Woodland, Calif.

The rankings, a co-production of Fortune and Great Place to Work, are based on employee feedback.

The article included these quotes from Publix employees:

“From the very beginning, the company makes you feel like family. I’ve made some of my closest friendships working at Publix. We have a strong connection and firm trust in one another. My team and I do our best to keep communication open, and if there are disagreements, we will work out a solution that benefits all parties. I really do go into work expecting to see friends and family. My superiors treat me with respect and I do my best to reflect that behavior with those less experienced than myself.”

“I am a health care professional (R.N.) who was looking to give back after becoming disheartened with health care today. Publix’s philosophy and mission, to me, is the polar opposite of most businesses. Their values—and the environment that results—have made it the perfect place for me to give back. Truly, customers and employees are treated with respect, dignity, and sincere helpfulness regardless of age, race, background, etc.”

In a Great Place to Work survey, 94 percent or more of Publix employees rated the company as having great challenges, great rewards, great pride, great communication and great bosses.

The article noted these rankings for Publix:

Asked to mention programs that makes Publix special, company officials listed stock ownership/retirement, holiday bonuses, tuition reimbursement, and 401(k) match.

Average salaries and additional cash compensation cited by the article include $29,077 for deli clerks and $120,585 for store managers.

If all this makes you want to apply for a job at Publix, here are some of the odds: More than 450,000 applications were received for 56,338 positions filled last year, many of them by current employees.
