Polk was one of the counties affected when Gov. Ron DeSantis diverted COVID-19 vaccines from counties to four federal vaccination sites, including the one in Tampa, USA Today’s Florida Capital Bureau reported. Seven thousands Moderna shots destined for Polk were affected, according to the subscribers-only article available on USA Today Network websites in Florida.

According to the article: “Polk County health officials initially told a reporter they didn’t know what she was talking about, then corrected themselves and said they had ‘back stock,’ and finally claimed they elected not to receive vaccines from the state this week ‘in order to preserve supply.’ “

The diversion of doses was part of DeSantis’ announcement that the federal sites would extend their stay until May 26.
