3:45 P.M. UPDATE
A married couple — he was 69, she was 72 — were killed in their west Lakeland mobile home, most likely by somebody they knew, Lakeland police said this afternoon.
Police went to the home at 3 a.m. today for a welfare check at the request of a family member who had not heard from the couple for several days; they found the bodies after forcing their way into the home in the Kings Manor all-ages mobile home community, police spokeswoman Robin Tillett said.
“Although very early in the investigation, preliminary evidence suggests the victims knew their attacker,” Tillett said in a news release. “Detectives continue to interview family members and possible witnesses related to the case.”
Crime scene investigators this morning were inspecting a powder blue home at 233 Kings Manor Court that backs up to ball fields at the city of Lakeland’s Westside Park.
It appeared the couple had died several days ago, Tillett said. Police are not releasing information on the manner in which they died. Police are also not releasing the victims’ names, citing Marsy’s Law.
“This is an active and open investigation, and updates will be provided as additional information becomes available for release. No other details will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation,” Tillett said.
