People play pickle ball

Pickleball is an exercise trend exploding in popularity because it’s a fast, fun, social activity that’s more accessible and less intimidating than tennis or basketball. But pickleball is also serving up a surprising number of injuries in middle-aged and older adults between the ages of 45 and 70.

“While pickleball is generally less strenuous than tennis, it still carries a risk of injury, particularly among older adults. However, staying active is essential for maintaining physical, mental and social well-being. By warming up, using the right gear and playing safely, you can enjoy pickleball and lower your chance of getting hurt. Supporting safe, accessible recreation like pickleball is an important part of promoting healthy aging and population wellness,” says Dr. Khadidga Koraibaa, Health First Health Plans medical director.

The impact and quick movements in a lot of sports, especially pickleball, can exacerbate existing joint issues. Recovery time can range from a couple of weeks to three months, depending on the severity of the injury. Minor strains or sprains typically take two to four weeks of recovery. Fractures or injuries that need rehab can easily stretch eight to 12 weeks. That’s a long time to be off your feet — especially if staying active was the goal in the first place.

Before you start a new exercise program or activity, consult your health care provider to check your health and fitness level and analyze potential risks. This is also a good time to review your health insurance plan for fitness and recovery benefits available to you.
