Listening, engaging with readers

Trinity Laurino

Executive Director

Yesterday marked two moments that highlight what LkldNow is all about for me. First, our founder and editor-at-large, Barry Friedman, celebrated his 72nd birthday. As we approach LkldNow’s 10th anniversary in September, it’s the perfect time to recognize his vision and dedication to local journalism.

Without Barry, LkldNow wouldn’t exist, let alone thrive.

Second, on social media we shared a short video of a protest outside U.S. Rep. Scott Franklin’s office, sparking debate – some calling it bias, others defending it as simply reporting an event. This ties back to a core principle Barry built LkldNow on: news as a dialogue with the community.

Unlike legacy media’s limited avenues for reader engagement, today’s feedback is immediate and constant — and we’re listening and engaging.

Our promise to you: We won’t shy away from thoughtful discussions about our journalism. We wrestle daily with what we cover, how we cover it and the real-life impact of our reporting – because we’re not just a news organization. We’re your neighbors.

We strive to make the best decisions with the time we have each day. If you have thoughts, questions, comments, please reach out.

This work continues only with your support. If you believe in LkldNow’s local journalism, please consider making a donation – monthly or one-time — to keep Barry’s legacy going.

A house with a striking roofline won the city of Lakeland’s residential beautification award for March. The newly built house at 720 W. 14th St. in the Paul A. The new Griffin Lofts affordable-housing complex received its first tenant over the weekend, Lakeland city commissioners learned Monday when the apartments won the city’s commercial beautification award for March. Its developers planted 30-plus new trees and salvaged much of the surrounding vegetation, city horticulturist Bill Koen said when presenting the award. Half of the complex’s 60 units are reserved for people earning less than 60% of the area median income. The other 30 units at 345 Griffin Road are for people who have experienced homelessness during the last year, a project official told commissioners. Learn more about the complex. | Barry Friedman, LkldNow
