The Lakeland City Commission could vote on whether to remove fluoride from the city’s water system during its meeting Monday.
The city of Lakeland added fluoride to its drinking water in 1981 as a way to prevent cavities.
Possibly removing fluoride is the last item on Monday’s agenda.
It’s a topic that is being discussed by city and county governments across the country.
Mayor Bill Mutz said Thursday that the commissioners will vote “if there is a concurrence.”
The Lakeland City Commission will meet on Monday at 9 a.m. at 228 South Massachusetts Ave., on the third floor of city hall.
Public comment can come prior to a vote on an item or at the end of the City Commission meeting.

At least two Lakeland commissioners and Mayor Bill Mutz attended a fluoride forum in Bartow on Feb. 18. The Bartow City Commission is also considering removing fluoride from their water system as well and will vote on the issue next month.
Lakeland currently adds fluoride at a level of 0.7 milligrams per liter, which is the amount recommended by the U.S. Public Health Service.
The World Health Organization has set a “safe limit” for fluoride in drinking water of 1.5 milligrams per liter.
