For the second day in a row, we started before sunrise at Lake Morton for Lakeland’s annual swan roundup. By 7:30 a.m., reporter Anna Toms was interviewing the veterinarian and volunteers.
By midmorning, we were on the road to Tampa to talk about Lakeland’s mayor’s race on WUSF’s Florida Matters . I edited the rough cut of the swan video while Anna drove.
Back in Lakeland, Insight Polk reporter Kayla Borg was writing this morning’s story on the LVIM–Citrus Connection partnership. By the afternoon, the swan footage was edited, the voice-over recorded, and the video published across three social platforms and embedded in our article before day’s end. Then we started lining up today’s reporting.
While it’s not every day I get to pet a swan or that we’re invited onto one of the region’s premiere public affairs shows, yesterday captured the rhythm of a small nonprofit newsroom: local focus, long days, and a lot of community pride.
