A new mural by a Lakeland-born painter at the RP Funding Center pays overt tribute to the Lakeland Magic and subtle homage to the city’s many lakes.

Gillian Fazio, 24, completed work Tuesday on the mural commissioned by the NBA G League team. It’s on the “hotel side” of the center, close to the Hyatt Place and facing the suites hotel being built in a former parking lot.

Fazio was careful to choose blues that match the basketball team’s branding, she said in a Lakeland Magic blog post that also says, “The design incorporates an artistic interpretation of water movement that represents the numerous lakes” in Lakeland.

Fazio is the product of local public schools — Rochelle School of the Arts and Lakeland High School — and the University of Florida, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in 2017.

She describes her art as a “realistic and unique style of painting” of animals and plants that incorporates patterns of both functional nature and aesthetic culture. Some of her local murals can be viewed at Lakeland Regional Health’s new Carol Barnett Women’s and Children’s Health Pavilion, Lincoln Avenue Academy and as part of the downtown Lakeland’s Tapestries project (seen here).

The Instagram-ready mural even has its own hashtag: #LKLDMagicMural. And it highlights LkdNow’s favorite hashtag: LKLD.

“I am definitely looking forward to seeing people’s photos posted of it,” Fazio said in the Magic’s blog post.
