The world bids farewell to Robert J. McManus Jr., who passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida, at the age of 79.

Dobie, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind cherished memories within the community. His life was marked by dedication and service.

Born on November 28, 1944, in Savannah, Georgia, Robert J. McManus Sr. and Ruth McManus welcomed their son into the world. Dobie graduated from Lakeland High School in 1964. During his school years, he participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) and continued in the reserves for two years. Dobie’s professional journey took him through various roles. He began working at the Publix Par 3 golf course alongside golf pro Jamie Jackson. When Lone Palm Golf Club opened, Dobie followed Jamie Jackson to become the first assistant golf pro. He briefly left Publix to work at Murray Cooke Company before returning to Publix, where he worked his way up from stocking shelves to becoming a store manager. Dobie spent a total of 17 years in Publix stores before managing a Publix Par 3 for another decade. Later, he transitioned back to Lone Palm, this time working with the maintenance team.

Dobie was an avid golfer and a member of the Senior Golfers group. He enjoyed traveling and participating in golf tournaments. Beyond golf, he was an active member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church, attending the Saturday 4 p.m. service regularly. His commitment extended to the Scottish Rite Masons, where he held the high honor of membership for over 25 years.

On October 23, 1977, Dobie married Leslie Ann McManus. Together, they shared a life filled with love, family, and companionship. Dobie’s family included his son Walter and wife Michelle, as well as his late son Scott. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and siblings William, Chris, and sister Ann Foxley. Dobie’s loyal companion, his dog Sheila, remained faithfully by his side even during his illness.

Services to honor Dobie’s life will be held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church located at 209 South Iowa Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33801, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. Following the service, a reception will take place at the Lone Palm Clubhouse.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Lakeland.

May the memory of Robert Joseph McManus Jr. continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Condolences may be sent to the family at Heath Funeral Chapel.
