Gospel Inc. is inviting Lakelanders to lace up their shoes and walk a mile around Lake Parker tomorrow for an important cause.
The group’s inaugural “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” event, which starts at 9 a.m., aims to raise $35,000 to help provide permanent housing for chronically homeless individuals.
The act of walking has special significance for the organization.
“The average health-conscious American attempts to take a minimum of 8,000 steps per day,” Executive Director Ray Steadman said.
“The average homeless person takes over 29,000 steps a day… Imagine having nowhere to go, no door to unlock, no bed to rest in. Just miles of walking,”

Four areas along the mile-long loop will have QR codes that participants can scan to see video testimonies.
“We’ve got one staff and three residents,” Gospel Inc. Engagement Officer Becki Rose said. “As people are walking, they can scan it and watch a quick video — not more than a minute — that shares a bit of personal impact the walk has on them.”
Rose said the group doesn’t know how many people will come, but is hoping for a strong turnout.
“People are registering online in advance, but I have a feeling that we are going to get people showing up that haven’t registered, and we will be registering them onsite,” she said.
