Starting on Monday, Lakeland is closing the Fletcher Park playground for about five days to remove two declining oak trees within the playground area. The skate park and ball fields will not be impacted by the project.

“The trees have noticeable and documented issues that could cause a hazard to those using the playground,” Communications Director Kevin Cook said in a news release.

Tree crews will work on removal and stump grinding during the business week so as not to impact the playground’s heavier weekend use. The playground will reopen once the failing trees and stumps are gone.

The park is located at 800 U.S. Highway 98 South, across from Lakeland Senior High School. Its playground received a complete makeover in 2016.

  1. Gonna miss the shade those trees provided. Are they gonna to put up some typr of shade covers, all the playground equipment is now in direct sunlight making it very difficult for smaller children to play. Everything’s getting too hot
