A new partnership between the Detroit Tigers and Florida Polytechnic University promises to give students hands-on experience addressing real-world challenges in player health while working with the team at their Spring Training home in Lakeland, according to a university press release.
“The partnership brings academia to an area of data analysis typically handled in-house by professional sports organizations,” according to the release.
As part of the agreement, Florida Poly will appoint a full-time associate professor of data science and sport analytics who will be embedded within the Tigers’ Performance Science group. Along with their teaching duties, the faculty member will conduct research to address complex performance challenges and develop practical applications for professional baseball.
“This partnership strengthens our ability to translate research into real decisions for our players,” said Dr. Georgia Giblin, vice president of health & performance for the Tigers.
Projects will include research related to predicting player injury risk as a means to improve health monitoring and help inform signing and draft decisions and using virtual models to understand the relationship between a pitcher’s mechanics, physical stress, and performance.
