The city of Lakeland is observing World Environment Day today, June 5, and suggesting that Lakelanders attend one of its Learn & Grow workshops.

The workshops, or classes, are held with the UF/IFAS Extension Polk County, a partnership between the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the Polk County Board of County Commissioners.

These are three upcoming free workshops:

The city has had several notable environmental remediation projects lately, including a trial to remove algae from Lake Bonnet that could be reused as jet fuel, and an effort to remove phosphorous from Crystal Lake, both of which are ongoing.

World Environment Day was first held in 1973. It’s the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.

Its first annual theme was “Only one Earth.” Its 2025 theme is “Ending plastic pollution.”
