A proposal to place three large warehouses southeast of the Florida Polytechnic University campus is drawing criticism from Auburndale city officials, who say it doesn’t fit their vision for a research park by the school. There’s been no reaction yet from the university or the city of Lakeland, whose wishes are to be taken into account under the county’s comprehensive plan.
Florida Southern College owns 58 off-campus properties in Lakeland, most of them in the South Lake Morton neighborhood. Some residents there fear campus encroachment and complain about student behavior, while others view the college and its students as neighbors and part of urban living, Gary White reports. Another structure that brings a contemporary twist to Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for Florida Southern College will soon face the Hollingsworth lakefront on the eastern end of the campus. A Southeastern University student checks out one of the Tecnam two-seater aircraft that will be used in a new pilot-training degree program being launched by the university this fall. President Kent Ingle led off a news conference at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport this morning to announce SEU is partnering with International Aero Academy Ltd. for the program designed to fast-track students at a time when aviation is facing severe pilot shortages. Trans State Airlines, a United Airlines operator, will offer graduates of the program an opportunity to transition into its first officer training program. #lkld #aviation

Dax Gingras, a father with two young children, was a physical education teacher at McKeel Elementary Academy before he was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer. Florida Southern College plans to buy the 2.1-acre grassy lot at the southwest corner of Ingraham and Palmetto from Grace Lutheran Church for an undisclosed amount. FSC did not comment on the pending sale, but the church’s interim pastor said college officials told her they plan to build apartments, which are allowed under current zoning.
