Add a new superlative to Carol Jenkins Barnett’s resume: She’s one of 22 new members of the Forbes 400, entering the list at No. 395 with a “real time net worth” today of $1.72 billion.
Barnett, a daughter of Publix Super Markets founder George Jenkins, was among the more than two-thirds of new members who inherited at least some of their wealth.
While Barnett is new to the list of 400 wealthiest Americans based on net worth, she joined the Forbes list of billionaires in 2013 when her wealth was estimated at $1 billion. She’s ranked at No. 50 among women on the list.
A bio on the Forbes website notes Jenkins, a Lakeland resident, owns just under 5 percent of Publix Super Markets, and it highlights her philanthropy, including longtime leadership of Publix’ charitable arm. The charity donates $40 million a year to nonprofits, Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous said.
Publix Super Market Charities “also donated $250,000 to the OneOrlando fund in the wake of the mass shooting at a nightclub there in June,” the bio said. “She recently donated $800,000 to prevent the legalization of marijuana.”
Florida is home to one-tenth of the Forbes 400, with 40 members now, up from 29 five years ago, The Tampa Bay Times reported.
