A 46-year-old Lakeland woman died just before 3 a.m. today when she was hit by a car while walking her bicycle in a crosswalk across U.S. 98 North at Griffin Road. The car that hit her had a green light, police said.
Denise Chapple of 628 Matthews Road was wearing dark clothing, according to Lakeland Police spokesman Gary Gross. The bicycle had reflectors on the front and rear, but no side-facing reflectors on the wheels, he said.
The Nissan that hit Chapple was southbound on U.S. 98 in an inside lane, he said. In addition to LPD, the Lakeland Fire Department and Polk County Fire Rescue responded and attempted life-saving measures. Chapple was pronounced dead at the scene.
The intersection was closed for about four hours this morning but has reopened. No charges have been filed and the investigation is proceeding, Gross said.
