Thousands of children and families will gather at Lake Mirror on Saturday, Oct. 31, for the 35th annual Red Ribbon Run, which combines friendly competition with a message of healthy, substance-free living.

The event typically draws about 10,000 runners, volunteers, and spectators, according to organizer InnerAct Alliance. First held in 1992, the Red Ribbon Run has grown into the largest annual running event around Lake Mirror.

Races will take place along the Frances Langford Promenade, with check-in beginning at 6:30 a.m. at Lake Mirror Auditorium.

The Kids Fun Run, also called the Red Ribbon Challenge, begins at 8:30 a.m. Children in kindergarten through eighth grade are grouped by grade level and gender. Trophies are awarded to top finishers, with additional awards recognizing schools with the highest participation rates.

High school students, parents, and other adults who want to run or walk together can participate in the Family Fun Run, scheduled for 10:45 a.m. This run is untimed, with an emphasis on participation rather than competition.
