Lakeland’s November beautification awards went to two properties in the Lake Morton area.
Residential beautification award

The residential award went to Bud and Donna Keller’s home at 1051 South Blvd., built in 1915 in the South Lake Morton historic district.
“One of the main features of the front yard is a giant staghorn fern,” said Stacy Smith, Lakeland’s chief horticulturalist.
“They’ve used sanaria very nicely to buffer their pool,” he added. “And on the other side of the house, it’s got this little courtyard with fiddle-leaf figs in it and lights and a mural on their garage.”
Commercial beautification award

The Manor at Lake Morton, a senior assisted living facility at 534 E. Lime St., received the commercial beautification award.
Smith said the two-story structure in the city’s Garden District has a “very nicely maintained landscape.”
He complimented the black diamond crape myrtle trees — a newer variety with deep purple and black foliage — and ixoras out front.
The facility is owned by Retirement Development Lakeland. It was built in 2016 as a “compatible infill” project in the historic East Lake Morton neighborhood.
The certificates were presented at the Nov. 3 City Commission meeting.
