In the same way taking classes can prepare students for prosperous careers, seniors can continue their education to help age in the best way.
“The essential elements of successful aging are keeping the mind stimulated, the body physically active, and the spirit uplifted,” said Rosemarie Lamm, executive director of the Rath Senior ConNEXTions Center.
To help local seniors have these experiences, the Rath Senior ConNEXTions Center promotes lifelong learning through its Senior Scholars program. This series of weekly classes covers topics such as computer skills, Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, to genealogy and tips for aging.
“In an everchanging society, seniors often feel excluded,” said Lamm. “Classes, like computer skills, combat this feeling and enable seniors to learn at their own pace in a relaxed environment.”
Class lineup:
- Computer Skills From Beginning to Intermediate (Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-noon): Staying connected in the digital age. Instructor: Randall Munsters
- Through the Lens of Frank Lloyd Wright (Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m.): History of architecture & Lakeland history. Instructor: Jack Coffey, B.A., FSC Director of Tours
- Sage-ing (Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-noon): A new vision of growing older. Instructor: Chuck Warren
- Genealogy (Thursdays, 1-3 p.m.): Discovering family roots and history. Instructor: Mary Flekke, MSL, Library Science
Sessions typically run for six weeks with the exception of a new one-day class this fall that will be led by Rev. Dr. Waite Willis. His seminar-style presentation will explore religions and beliefs throughout the world.
Founded in 2004, the Rath Senior ConNEXTions Center has spent two decades connecting seniors with resources and education. Originally part of the University of South Florida, it became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2013. The organization is fully volunteer-run, relying on donations and program fees to continue its mission. “We connect seniors and their families with services they may need,” said Lamm.
