SCHOOL: Polk County School Board members Lisa Miller and Billy Townsend have questioned the motive for a staff proposal to do away with buses for charter schools. Rob Davis, the district’s head of transportation, said the elimination of the service would save money and get some other students to school on time. Miller and Townsend asked if the effort was to eliminate the liability surrounding serving some of the most disabled students in the county.

HOME: A family using an oven as a heating source lost their mobile home in the 3000 block of 3015 Tenoroc Mine Road. Lakeland Fire Department officials noted there wasn’t a hydrant close to the home in the unincorporated area.

PLAY: “Detroit,” a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, will receive stage read performances at Lakeland Community Theatre on Feb. 6 and 7. The tale of two couples discussing modern economic issues in suburbia over a backyard barbecue features actors reading their parts.
