Polk State College will launch a new commercial vehicle driving program with the help of a $2 million FloridaCommerce Florida Job Growth Grant, announced Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday, Aug. 31.
The grant will fund a new commercial driver’s license (CDL) training facility at Polk State’s Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center in Bartow. The facility will include an 80,000-square-foot driving pad to support behind-the-wheel training.
The program will also provide financial assistance to qualifying students and expand partnerships with local businesses and economic development organizations in industries including logistics and transportation, aviation and aerospace, and manufacturing and defense.
Polk State President Anastasios Kamoutsas said the grant will help provide students with affordable, short-term training while strengthening the workforce available to local employers.
“We are grateful for Gov. DeSantis, FloridaCommerce, and the Polk County Legislative Delegation’s continued investment in workforce education at Polk State College,” Kamoutsas said in a statement.
Polk State says the initiative builds on their existing relationships with local economic development organizations and commitment to strengthening the Polk County workforce.
