TOP STORY

Sometimes a statewide story has deep local impacts. Anna Toms reports on the new map for Florida’s congressional districts and what it means specifically for Lakeland and Polk county.

Transportation infrastructure has been a hot topic locally as Lakeland seeks to catch up to its growth. Cindy Glover examines what it takes โ€” financially, physically, and mentally โ€” to navigate Lakeland without a car.

In her last article for LkldNow, Kayla Borg reports on Mi Escuela Montessori’s growing enrollment and upcoming move to Bartow.

For the past year, Kaylaโ€™s reporting has helped bring to light the human impact behind barriers to quality of life in Polk County through Insight Polk, a community reporting initiative supported by GiveWell Community Foundation and United Way of Central Florida. Her thoughtful storytelling made an impact โ€” so much so that another organization recruited her to serve as their in-house storyteller.

Kayla said, โ€œReporting for Insight Polk allowed me to connect with so many inspiring people and gain a deeper understanding of both the challenges and strengths within our community. While itโ€™s bittersweet to say goodbye, Iโ€™m excited to be stepping into a new professional chapter. Iโ€™ll always be thankful for my time at LkldNow, for Trinity Laurino, and for the entire team who supported me along the way.โ€

While weโ€™re sad to see her go, weโ€™re excited for her next chapter.

A generous Lakeland community member has agreed to match every donation to LkldNow dollar-for-dollar, up to $8,000, through May 31.

We’ve started strong with ~$1,400 so far. Will you help us keep the momentum?
