Updates: award, voter guide, support

Trinity Laurino

Executive Director

Before diving into this week’s news, including results from Tuesday’s primary, here are three quick updates:

1. Kudos to Kimberly C. Moore! We’re thrilled to share that Kimberly won a Sunshine State Award for breaking news from the Society of Professional Journalists. Her outstanding coverage of the January 2023 drive-by shooting on Iowa Avenue earned first place, beating out larger outlets like the Florida Times-Union and Tallahassee Democrat. We couldn’t be prouder of Kimberly and our small-but-mighty news team.

2. Thank you for using our Voter Guide! It’s our most comprehensive guide yet, and we’re glad it was helpful to so many of you. We know some of you wished it was available earlier, and we’re with you on that. With Kimberly and Cindy covering daily news, our editor-at-large, Barry Friedman, was able to devote more than 100 hours to this project in the window between the qualifying deadline and the primaries. The guide is a labor of love and research, especially with the new race-specific questionnaires. Barry is keeping at it and plans to get the Voter Guide updated for the general election around the time voters receive vote-by-mail ballots.

3. This vital work is made possible by your donations. Your support funds not just the Voter Guide but all the reporting you rely on from LkldNow. We’re grateful to the 75 supporters who’ve helped us raise $2,108 toward our $5,000 August goal. Can you help us close the gap in the next 9 days? You can donate here. Thank you for keeping local news alive in Lakeland!

Dixieland Elementary School joins the century club this year. When it opened in 1924, it was Lakeland’s third “grammar school” and its Ariana Street location was considered on the outskirts of town. Some of its original students had previously attended Lake Morton Elementary School. (That school, which occupied the site of the current Lakeland Public Library, burned down in 1963.) There have been quite a few improvements in the last 100 years, including an expansion seen on the right side of the 2024 picture. | Photos: Lakeland Public Library special collection and Barry Friedman, LkldNow
