The Lakeland Police Department (LPD) will conduct Active Shooter Response Training at Florida Southern College (FSC) from July 6 through 17. Training exercises will take place on weekdays from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

During these training sessions, people in the area may notice an increased law enforcement presence on and around the FSC campus, including marked and unmarked police vehicles, specialized equipment, and officers participating in realistic training scenarios. Individuals in the area may also hear simulated gunfire and observe officers wearing tactical gear.

These are planned training exercises, and there is no threat to the public.

In a statement, LPD explained the training:

Providing officers with realistic, scenario-based training is essential to ensuring they are prepared to respond quickly, effectively, and safely during critical incidents. Continuous training helps officers sharpen their decision-making, coordination, and response skills while enhancing the department’s ability to protect the community.
