Larry was born to John Wesley (Jake) and Opal Roena Herrin Edgy on April 27, 1942 in Nahunta, GA. Larry was the oldest of two boys. His brother Johnny (aka Johnny Cake) was 20 months younger. The family lived in Brunswick, Georgia. His father, Jake, worked at the Edgy Sawmill near the house. His mother, Opal, took care of the home and the boys. They were fortunate to have family living all around them, so cousins were also their playmates whether playing marbles or Cowboys and Indians. Larry loved sports. He played Little League Baseball on St. Simons Island and in Brunswick. He attended Pine Ridge Baptist Church where he gave his heart to Jesus. He attended and graduated in 1960 from Glynn Academy in Brunswick. Larry and two of his cousins, Taft and Carroll Minchew joined the US Air Force together in May 1960.
Larry spent almost 26 years in the US Air Force as a part of Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Supply. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed within the US and also abroad seeing snow in Labrador to dreary overcast days in Germany. He married in 1964 and had two children, Kimberly and Lance. Lance was born while they were in Tokyo, Japan. While in Germany, he coached Lance in Little League football, baseball and basketball. The parents and players had great respect for Larry. He believed in discipline for the teams and kids wanted him as their coach. Larry did his final station in Korea. He returned to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and retired in January of 1986 as an E-9 Chief Master Sergeant. Following retirement he worked at Crystals International and Alumax/Alcoa in Materials Management and Procurement. In 1996, Larry married Heidi and added to the family three more children, Jamie, Brooke and Joshua. He retired from working in May 2008 and became a stay at home dad to the younger kids. As the family continued to grow with grandchildren, each one had their own special place in his heart. He was so proud of all his kids and grandchildren.
Larry’s love of sports stayed with him through his life. He loved the Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs. If Florida and Georgia played, he would root for Florida, but he still had a love for Georgia. Larry enjoyed gardening. He had two gardens in Nebraska, where he grew tomatoes and other vegetables. Tomatoes were something that he loved eating ever since he was a kid. He also enjoyed being in the yard and doing yard work. It was therapy to him. Larry found joy in keeping the lawn and shrubbery manicured like a picture in a magazine. He had high expectations for how the yard was to look. Saturday mornings would be filled with music playing all around the house and him in the yard, clipping away. Heidi’s grandmother, Ruth told Larry on more than one occasion, she could watch him work for hours.
Larry still loved being close to family and attending the Edgy family reunions each year that he could. Seeing the cousins he grew up with was always a joy to him. He would start talking about it early in the year and checking in with cousins Brenda Rowe, Patricia Lewis and Edwin Minchew along with his niece Jennifer Edgy Smith to see who all was attending. Traveling back to St. Simons, Jekyll Island and Brunswick to his old stomping grounds made him happy. He enjoyed taking his family to all the places where he grew up and telling stories along the way. And of course, eating shrimp at every opportunity!
The family get togethers with all the kids and grandchildren will not be the same without Chief, Larry, Dad, Pa. His potato salad has always been a staple and his legacy is being carried on with Heidi and his kids. His smiling face and joyful spirit will be missed. We have a lot of memories of our times with Larry to share to keep his legacy going.
