Birda Nell Winter, 89, passed away at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, Tennessee on Friday, March 3, 2023.
Nell was born in Putnam County, Tennessee on June 17, 1933, to parents Thomas and Otice (Martin) Matheny. In 1934, at just a year old, her family moved to Florida, where she has resided since, living in Polk County from Eaton Park, Highland City, to Lakeland.

Her first job was working as a cardex clerk for Raybro Electric, then later she worked at the daycare at Pathway Christian School before retirement. Around retirement, she became a nanny for her doctor for many years and they became very close.
Nell loved puzzles, card games, Yahtzee, and crochet. She crocheted almost anything – hats, scarves, blankets, you name it. She had a love for bells and began collecting them over the years.
In addition to her husband John Winter, Nell is preceded in death by daughter Barbara Elaine Craig and her parents.
She is survived by children John Michael Winter, Pamela (Kenny) Crews, Michelle (Daniel) Moriarty, and Sarah (Angelo) Hoag; brother Tommy (Carol) Matheny; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
