“On a mission to save dogs and cats when natural disasters and man-made disasters strike,” SPCA Florida and its Polk County branch are offering classes to train volunteers for the Florida State Animal Response Coalition (FL SARC) — to “ensure these animals have someone on their side when they need it the most,” according to a news release.

Volunteers are invited to take the Awareness Level Small Animal Emergency Sheltering class on Saturday, July 19, at the SPCA Florida Education Building, 5850 S. Brannen Road, in Lakeland.

The Awareness Level class “will provide the knowledge and skills needed to work in an emergency animal shelter as a trained professional disaster animal responder.”

FL SARC team members will be able to:

  • Respond to local, state, and national natural or man-made disasters
  • Deploy emergency resources and trained responders
  • Transport animals to safety before, during and after a disaster

The class is open to anyone interested in being trained to help companion animals during a disaster.

Additional training classes will be listed on the FL SARC website as they are scheduled.
