Publix at Lake Miriam Square reopened Thursday, Nov. 13, after a 16-month facelift.

There are 884 Publix stores in Florida, but Hannah Herring, media relations manager for Publix Super Markets, said this one is significant in the grocer’s history. The Lake Miriam location originally opened as a Food World in 1977 — 48 years ago this Saturday, Nov. 15.

It became a Publix in 1988, and “when we switched it over, you know, we really started to try new things in this store … this particular location was known to, you know, be kind of a testing center for a lot of the modern conveniences that we see in today’s store.”

In 1988, that Publix had seating for over 92 people. Today, the Lake Miriam location pays homage to that history with its second-story mezzanine offering café seating and Wi-Fi, so customers can grab a meal from the deli or hot bar downstairs, then find a seat upstairs to relax, hang out with friends or get some work done.

The store also features an iconic mural that was previously in the original Grove Park Publix. “When we tore it down, we were able to preserve the mural and then resurrect it here at the new Lake Miriam Store,” Herring said.

It took about two weeks to stock the shelves in the 55,701-square-foot store.

Herring said the store combines the traditional Publix shopping experience with more hot and made-to-order items, plus features and products that people loved at GreenWise Market.

Ready-to-eat options at Lake Miriam Publix include:

  • Sushi, poke and ramen bowls
  • Burrito and pasta bowls
  • Sandwich melts
  • Pasta bowls
  • Pizza

‘Pours’ also offers smoothies, açaí bowls, and drinks.
