After nearly three years as staff reporter at LkldNow, Kimberly C. Moore is leaving the independent nonprofit’s newsroom to pursue other endeavors. Moore joined LkldNow in 2022 and was the second hire made by the organization founded by veteran Lakeland journalist Barry Friedman.
“Hiring Kimberly marked the first expansion of our newsroom to include full-time staff journalists. It was a major milestone for us and being able to do it with someone already known to the community was a plus,” said Trinity Laurino, LkldNow’s executive director.
“It’s no secret that the news industry has been struggling. For years, LkldNow has grown in audience and revenue, despite the larger industry trend. Support from major national funders like Google’s News Initiative provided a catalyst for much of our growth but as conditions change, we have to stay nimble and adapt our work so we can continue to serve our mission. We’ll always be grateful for Kimberly’s role in growing this movement for community journalism and we wish her well in her future endeavors,” Laurino continued.
During her tenure at LkldNow, Moore has written over 1,000 articles covering everything from breaking news on hurricane relief efforts, to the everyday lives of Lakelanders, such as her article on one couple’s struggle to insure their historic home.
In 2024, Moore was recognized by the Society for Professional Journalists with the Sunshine State Award for Breaking News for her 2023 coverage of Lakeland’s mass shooting and its fallout.
“Kimberly grew up in Lakeland so she understands the community’s history,” Friedman said. “One of her specialties is personality profiles, such as her engaging portrait of retired baseball star Willie Horton and his experiences in Lakeland. Her coverage of Lakeland’s annual Christmas parade last year provided a sample of her skill at telling stories with photos and videos.”
Recently, Moore has been a fixture of LkldNow’s video news coverage, creating short-form video versions of news stories for social media platforms.
In a career spanning 35 years, Moore has worked for news organizations including The Ledger, New York Times Regional News Group, Florida Today, Florida’s News Channel, WTWC, WSVN, States News Service and the Israel Broadcast Authority.
In addition, Moore is a talented photographer who will be exhibiting some of her work later in the year and is the author of “Star Crossed: The Story of Astronaut Lisa Nowak.”
