Cherry-sized hail hit parts of Lakeland during a storm at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

It was the second day in a row Lakeland has seen rain. On Wednesday evening, a quarter to a third of an inch of rain fell on parts of Lakeland.

National Weather Service meteorologist Tony Hurt said Lakeland remains in a drought and is 2 to 4 inches below the average for this time of the year. Polk County is currently under a burn ban because of the tinder-dry conditions.

Hurt said in the next week, Central Florida should begin its summer pattern of afternoon showers.
