This Saturday, Sept. 19, through Wednesday, Sept. 23, marks the opening for fall’s duck hunting season. During this first window, hunters are limited to wood and teal ducks.
After last year’s duck hunting season took some lakeside residents by surprise, the city of Lakeland is making a concerted effort to get the word out by posting public notices on social media.
“Residents and visitors enjoying Lakeland’s lakes, waterways, and surrounding areas are encouraged to be aware of hunting activity and use caution near permitted hunting areas,” city staff wrote in a public notice.
Hunters must follow all applicable Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) rules and regulations, which include:
- Possessing a no-cost migratory bird permit and hunting license (exceptions exist for hunters under 16 and over 65)
- Adhering to bag limits
- Hunting only during designated hours: one-half hour before sunrise until sunset

Regular duck season is open Nov. 21 to 29 and Dec. 12 through Jan. 31, 2027.
