Lakeland’s Confederate monument was moved from Munn Park to Veterans Park more than a year ago, but the legal battle over the move is still being fought in federal court. Organizations that opposed the move went to court last year to have the 110-year-old monument returned on free-speech grounds; a federal judge dismissed the case, but the organizations filed an appeal. An Atlanta-based panel of appeals heard the case Thursday, and they “appeared skeptical of the Confederate heritage advocates’ First Amendment claims,” Courthouse News Service reported.
