For Alison Foley-Rothrock and the Red Tent Initiative nonprofit she founded in Lakeland, #metoo and #timesup are more than hashtags; they prompt activism to assist victims of abuse and exploitation.
“The title timesup is really aprospos,” said Foley-Rothrock, whose organization’s annual fund-raiser is scheduled for March 31. “The time has come. Society is ready. It’s time for change. It’s long past due. The social pressure is building. It can’t be just about wearing black dresses and pins. How do we harness the energy? Now, what are we really going to do about it?”
McKeel Students Claim School Squelched Walkout Plans
Students claim administrators at McKeel Academy of Technology prevented students from holding a solidarity-with-Parkland rally at 10 a.m. today as other schools around the nation did and instead held a fire drill. School officials have not responded to requests for comment. ABC Action News reports students had been threatened with detention if they participated in a walkout and quotes students who speculate the fire alarm was created as a cover when administrators realized they had made a mistake and that a crowd outside the school would look good for the cameras on TV station helicopters in the area.
