Some Polk County residents were surprised last week when their property tax payments or vehicle registration renewals were returned by the U.S. Postal Service marked “undeliverable.”

The Tax Collector’s Office said a processing error at the USPS facility in Tampa caused the problem, but it has now been resolved.

The issue surfaced on Monday, Nov. 3. By midweek, several customers were posting on social media that payments they mailed to the Polk County Tax Collector’s Office had been returned.

A customer’s property tax payment was returned with a label saying “return to sender / attempted – not known / unable to forward.”

In a news release and on social media, Tax Collector Joe Tedder expressed sympathy and said USPS has told his office that the problem has been fixed.

“Paying taxes and registrations is already challenging enough,” said Tedder.  “But when the U.S. Post Office struggles to deliver mail, it becomes extremely frustrating for both our customers and our office.”

There are also other ways to pay:

Because the issue happened at the beginning of the month, it should not affect homeowners’ discounts or trigger penalties for other types of payments. Reach out to the Tax Collector’s Office directly with any questions.
