The Polk County School Board unanimously approved rezoning for its 16 high schools during their Tuesday, Jan. 27, meeting.

New zoning will take effect in the 2026-27 school year. Students currently enrolled in a Polk County high school who are affected by rezoning will not be required to switch schools but may choose to do so.

“Regardless of any changes, students may remain at the high school they currently attend where they have already begun their academic career, and PCPS will continue providing bus transportation for eligible students,” district officials said in a statement.

As populations have grown in Polk County, the district has said that some schools are overcrowded while other facilities are underutilized. They said the goal of rezoning is to balance enrollment and maximize resources.

“PCPS is implementing these changes thoughtfully and with great care to minimize disruption for our families,” district officials said.

Polk County Public Schools will begin the rezoning process for middle schools next, followed by elementary schools.
