Students pursuing STEM careers will have more transfer opportunities through a new partnership between Polk State College and Florida Polytechnic University.
The two institutions signed an agreement on July 30 creating the Eagle to Phoenix Pathway program, which allows Polk State students to complete an Associate in Arts degree and the required prerequisite courses before transferring directly into one of 10 designated bachelor’s degree programs at Florida Poly.
Currently, one credit hour at Polk State costs in-state students from $112 to $123. An in-state undergraduate student at Florida Poly pays roughly $165 per credit hour. Transferring credits from Polk State will help to reduce the overall cost of a four-year degree from Florida Poly.
The agreement expands on a 2019 partnership that offers a transfer pathway to a single degree. Under the new program, students can transfer into bachelor’s programs in aerospace, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, and mechanical engineering, as well as applied mathematics, computer science, cybersecurity, and physics.
College leaders said the partnership strengthens Florida’s statewide 2+2 transfer system by guaranteeing admission into specific Florida Poly STEM programs. They also said the expanded pathway will help meet the state’s growing demand for STEM professionals while giving local students a clearer route to earning bachelor’s degrees.
