Earlier this month, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, appearing on Fox News, was asked about the upward-spiraling price of eggs, which had been a presidential campaign issue.
“I think the silver lining in all of this,” Rollins said, “is how do we, in our backyards — we’ve got chickens too in our backyard — how do we solve for something like this and people are sort of looking around and thinking, ‘Wow, maybe I could get a chicken in my backyard,’ and it’s awesome.”

Some people found Rollins’s suggestion offensive or insensitive, and some did not. In the latter group, people, including in Lakeland, went looking for chicks.
There are at least several things you need to know before you get a clutch of chicks in Lakeland.
Among them is, where are they?

Where the chicks are: One is, or was, Lay’s Western Wear Feed and Pet Supply (5530 Old Road 37). On Monday, Lay’s had none, but the store was expecting 450 chicks at the end of May, and more in June.
“We severely underestimated the number of people who want chickens,” Lay’s salesperson Olivia Newman said.
Next stop: Tractor Supply, Lakeland, at 6945 U.S. Hwy 98 N.
Also reached on Monday, Tractor Supply said they had none — but they’d have more on Wednesday.
“As soon as we get ’em, we sell out,” said a salesman who declined to be named.
Their last shipment was of 1,000, he said, “and they lasted 45 minutes.”
