Lakeland is assessing the damage after Hurricane Milton pummeled the city overnight with sustained 85 mile-per-hour winds and gusts that were higher. As of 6 a.m., Lakeland Electric reported 86,664 customers — about two-thirds of its service area — without power.

Utility crews from other cities and states arrived before the storm and staged at Tigertown. They will be helping Lakeland Electric to restore service.

In the meantime, Lakeland Police urged people to stay off the roads, check on their neighbors and take care of each other.

  1. Thanks to all of the hard workers servicing Lakeland while electric is out for most of the city. Shout out to 7-11 for being open morning after the destruction. There was literally nothing else open. And seriously, some people need their licenses revoked. I’ve seen 3 bad accidents within 15 minutes because at major intersections. Treat an intersection with lights out like a 4-way stop, it’s not that hard and part of the driving exam. Whatever you have to do isn’t more important than everyone else trying to contact their family and friends as well.
