Karen Vaughey “KMAC” MacDonald

May 6, 1944 – October 1, 2026

Mrs. Karen Vaughey McDonald of Lakeland, FL, affectionately known as KMAC, gracefully wrote the last lines of her story in the early morning hours of Oct. 1, 2026

Born in Los Angeles, CA, she is survived by her husband, Michael Walsh, and four children.

A teacher of more than three decades, KMAC’s unconventional methods and rebellious nature made her a staple in the hearts of students and teachers alike. A graduate of UC Berkley who taught English and Drama in Oregon for over a decade before relocating to Florida, she was among the most effective, respected, and storied educators in the Polk County school system for over twenty years.

In her final weeks, she was adamant with care staff and friends that she continued to be known as KMAC, because that’s who she still was sarcastic and ornery, yet hopeful and inquisitive. She understood that her name would be her legacy.

Through her failing health, she retained the wit and wisdom for which she was well known, and remained fond and curious about many who took her classes across her tenure as an educator at Fort Meade High School in Fort Meade, FL. Her impact was expansive and lasting, and she came to know it before closing her eyes for the last time.

It would be impossible to calculate the value of her contributions, just as it is impossible to quantify the weight of her loss.
