It is with heartfelt love and deep gratitude for his life that we announce the passing of David J. Groom, who entered into eternal rest on November 12, 2025, at his home in Lakeland, Florida.

He was born in Miami, Florida, David was the beloved son of Rosemary P. Groom and Hugh P. Groom. He proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the United States Army, RA Signal Corps – STRATCOM, from 1964 to 1967. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After his military years, David enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a locksmith for Jacksonville University, from which he later retired.

David’s deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ was the center of his life. He served faithfully at his church on the Nehemiah Security Team, the Care Team, and as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. His commitment to ministry extended to many organizations he cared deeply about, including Yesha Ministries, Seamark Ranch, Daniel Memorial, and Dr. Paul Lamb Tai Chi for Health.

A lifelong learner and dedicated practitioner of martial arts, David achieved the rank of 2nd degree Black Belt. He was devoted to Taekwondo, Tai Chi, and Qigong, which brought him both discipline and joy throughout his life.

David is survived by his loving wife, Penny M. Groom, and his daughter, Mary F. Groom. He is also survived by in-laws Janet Masterson, Frank & Janet Masterson, Dawn Sawn, and Heather & Jon Prokop, as well as former in-laws Lisa McGrath and Michelle White.

He is cherished in memory by his nieces Amanda Spickerman, Meg McGrath, and Maggie White, and by his nephews Frank Masterson, Daniel Masterson, Steve Martinez, Thomas Martinez, Hunter Prokop, Devin Prokop, Connor Prokop, David Spickerman, Conor McGrath, Timothy White, and John White.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Rosemary and Hugh Groom; his brother, Claude Groom; in-law Thomas Sawn, Frank Masterson Jr., and Tammy Masterson; former wife Debra Groom; and former in-laws John White and Steve White.

A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornerstone Hospice, in honor of David’s compassionate spirit and his lifelong dedication to caring for others.

Psalms 91:1–2 “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God and I trust Him.”

David wished to be remembered as “a work in progress trying to follow the path of Jesus.” His love for Jesus was evident in the way he served others throughout his life. He often said he was “blessed far better than he deserved,” and those who knew him would agree that he, in return, blessed others beyond measure.

Condolences may be sent to the family at Heath Funeral Chapel.
