Volunteers hold swans while they wait for their yearly checkups. | Anna Toms, LkldNow

The city of Lakleand’s 45th annual swan roundup began yesterday on Lake Morton. Fifty-four swans were corralled, compared to forty-four last year.

The size of the flock varies from year to year depending on factors like traffic, weather and water quality. Last year, Hurricane Milton interrupted the breeding season, lowering numbers.

The birds spent last night in a pen in preparation for today’s annual health checkup. Volunteers arrived early this morning to hold the swans and escort them throughout the process.

Dr. Price Dickson of My Pet’s Animal Hospital leads a team that does a physical, noting weight and heart rate. New members of the flock get a blood test to determine gender and are microchipped for future recordkeeping and tracking. She checks each bird from beak to tail, looking for injuries or signs of infection, and the exam ends with a dewormer.

Dr. Dickson said she looks forward to giving back by caring for the swans each year.
