For the first time since 2012, Lakeland’s minor league baseball team, the Lakeland Flying Tigers has clinched the state championship. The team won two straight games during a best of three series with a 9-2 win over the Daytona Tortugas in Game 2.
The Flying Tigers won Game 1 in Daytona, 6-1, on Sunday, followed by a 9-2 victory in front of more than 1,200 fans during a home game at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium on Tuesday. The winning streak was led by catcher Ricardo Hurtago, who went 2-for-5 in Game 2 with a double and two runs batted in (RBI).
The Flying Tigers completed the rare sweep of the Florida State League in 2025 and became just the third team in league history to win both halves of the regular season and the FSL Championship (1995 Daytona, 2024 Palm Beach). Lakeland won 75 games in the regular season, dominating at home with a 44-21 final record at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium.
