On Thursday, March 12, Florida Southern College’s Lawton M. Chiles Center for Florida History will host author Bob Kealing and musician and WMNF presenter Billy C. Wirtz for a screening of their film “The Florida Chitlin’ Circuit.”
This event is free and open to the public.
The 45-minute documentary explores Florida’s vibrant mid-20th-century circuit for Black entertainers. Through interviews with R&B and blues legends, the film offers stories from those who lived and loved the scene. Music and question and answer session will follow.

Kealing is an Edward R. Murrow and four-time Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist. He has written on topics ranging from Elvis, The Beatles, and Jack Kerouac in Florida, Winter Haven native Gram Parsons, and the partnership between inventor Earl Tupper and marketing genius Brownie Wise that brought the world Tupperware.
Wirtz is a musician, former special education teacher, a satirist, published writer, former wrestling manager, music historian, music educator, and radio show host. “It might seem that blues & boogie-woogie pianist, Billy C. Wirtz (real name William Wirths), was unsure which career path to follow, so he found a way to follow them all,” Anita Schlank wrote in 2023 in “Blues Blast Magazine.”
